Air source heat pumps work much the same way as ground source heat pumps, except that they use the energy in the ambient air as opposed to taking that from the ground. They typically have a unit that is located outside of the building with a smaller unit inside the building.

Generally speaking, the air source heat pumps are easier and less costly to install. They are however slightly less efficient.
